Marika Cobbold among authors opting out of Google settlement
23 Feb 2010
A number of authors have opted out of the Google settlement.
Marika Cobbold, author of books such as
Guppies for Tea and
Shooting Butterflies, has opted out of the Google settlement.
She is joined by a number of well known and reputed writers such as Jacqueline Wilson, Jeffrey Archer and Thomas Pynchon, according to the Guardian.
Explaining the reasons behind her opt-out, the author said that while she had a great deal of respect for Google, the long-term implications of allowing the web-based company to scan and store her works were unknown.
She told the news provider: "My feelings were, in the end, that I doubted I would lose out by opting out, whereas I might do by opting in.
"Also there was the principle that copyright is important. It would be like handing over my babies to a babysitter I'd never met."
A number of deceased authors' estates have also declined Google's invitation to place their works in its online library. These include novels by Rudyard Kipling and Roald Dahl, among many others.
