A government-funded campaign is encouraging older people to write their own books.
Sir Andrew Motion, author of books such as
The Cinder Path, has backed a campaign encouraging older people to join book clubs and write their own novels.
The Bookbite project, which is government-funded and run by the Booktrust charity, will offer advice and opportunities to aspiring authors of the older generations through its website and magazine, according to the BBC.
Sir Andrew said that people should not be discounted as authors just because they are old, insisting the qualities needed to write a book do not diminish with age.
He told the news provider: "To encourage the over-60s to discover and develop their interest in creative reading and writing reminds us that the life of the imagination offers its rewards at all times of life."
The initiative comes after research on behalf of Bookbite found that increasing numbers of older people are using the internet with a greater degree of confidence, with 31 per cent using it specifically to publish short stories or join a book club.
