Winner of the Richard & Judy Summer Read 2008.
A fantastic opening plot that pulls you straight in to the story and makes you have to read in one or two sittings as curiosity just gets the better of you. Fourteen year old Cynthia wakes up one morning to find her mother, father and brother have all completely disappeared without trace. 25 years later Cynthia might just start to get some answers as to what happened to them. The feelings of abandonment, doubt, anger and anguish that Cynthia feels are brought across through the main narrator of the book, Cynthia’s husband, which is clever way of getting the sense of frustration both feel, her because she needs answers and him because he wants her to be able to close that chapter of her life and move on. Apart from a slight lull in the middle this book will sweep you up with it’s pace and intrigue, perfect for a holiday read.

Winner of the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction 2007.An unusual and delightful debut that all lovers of A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian will adore. Normally I find novels written in emails, memos, diary entries and the like, such as this is, irritating but this succeeds on all levels. The different strains of the madcap story, reported in different voices, works a treat and as the characters are developed and the plot unfolds, so your interest is held vice-like. Part political satire, part scientific experiment, part spiritual enlightenment and part love story, it is highly accomplished, lightly amusing, unexpectedly touching and very rewarding. I truly loved it.
Comparison: Marina Lewycka, Mark Haddon, Ben Elton.

February 2012 Guest Editor Joanna Trollope on Hilary Mantel...
I loved her writing, long before the mega success of Wolf Hall. She wrote the best novel (bad title – A Place of Greater Safety) I ever read about the French Revolution, and some great modern ones – like Fludd and Eight Days on Gazzah Street. She isn’t just clever and original, she is also seriously funny, and I love that.

A 2011 World Book Night selection.

February 2012 Guest Editor Joanna Trollope on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie...
Here’s a real find. A gorgeous (in every sense) young writer who makes modern stories sound fresh but as if they come from ancient story tellers, at the same time – it’s something about the wonderful rhythms of her language. My favourite of hers is Half of a Yellow Sun but I loved Purple Hibiscus too. You can smell and feel Africa; you believe in these people – it’s not easy to create such a powerful reality, and she does it so well.

Our Editorial Guru, Sarah Broadhurst, has suggested others book and authors that would be perfect for you to read next or to pass on the recommendation - so your gift will keep on giving enjoyment. Her selections for this title are: Sofi Oksanen (Purge), Helen Oyeyemi.
