Canongate and Walker, two of the very best independent publishing houses in the UK – one on the adult side and the other a children’s book publisher, have joined forces to introduce 're-jackected' modern literary classics (such as The Life of Pi by Yann Martel, winner of the Booker Prize) to a new younger audience.
“Bestselling and award winning titles
that will grab the attention of the next generation of readers lie at
the heart of this exciting joint venture of Walker and Canongate, both
highly respected independent publishers. Strikingly packaged and
covering a range of popular genres, the four titles, some written for
them and some written for adults, speak directly to teen readers while
also propelling them towards other adult fiction.” Julia Eccleshare
Latterly, it seems the best thing that can happen to a children’s book is for it to ‘transfer’ into the adult market – vampire saga Twilight is a classic example. So, it is refreshing to see the reverse with this latest joint venture which can be seen as a response to the cry of some children’s books ‘dumbing down’ the literary content.
We think it’s terrific that two such awesome publishing houses have decided to bring some great adult reads to the teen market too, so we are featuring the first 4 books being published and more are scheduled in 2011.
