Trainspotting Irvine Welsh
I tried this before the film came out and found the Scottish dialect difficult to cope with and gave up. Then I saw the film and was able to return to the book with their voices in my head and... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
The Talented Mr Ripley Patricia Highsmith
I hated Jude Law as Mr Ripley, not how I saw this wonderfully manipulative character at all, and not a good portrayal of one of the greatest crime novels of the 20th century. There is far more depth and complexity... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
Memoirs of a Geisha Arthur Golden
A first novel, so in some ways one must forgive the author for a little flagging in the middle. Having said that I do most earnestly recommend it. As an insight into the extraordinary culture, it is flawless. Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
The French Lieutenant's Woman John Fowles
A tale of illicit love, passion and repression for this is Victorian England and such events that unfold in this brilliant novel were not correct. It’s not an easy read and perhaps its multiple endings can be confusing but it... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
Fight Club Chuck Palahniuk
This is one of the few books in this list that if you’ve seen and loved the film you are in for a very different and wild experience. There is no way that the film could portray this masterpiece fully.... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
Death in Venice and Other Stories Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann’s writing is what holds this way above the film, and in this edition you get a whole lot more than just the one perfect and very special novella. Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
Catch 22 Joseph Heller
I thought this was a rotten film, but then I read the book first which is ten times better than the film and then some. Full of black humour, pure horror and lashings of irony, it is tedious and repetitive... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
Brighton Rock Graham Greene
I just love this man’s writing. The 17-year old, razor happy gang leader, Pinkie, is one of fiction’s great characters, truly nasty. Despite the dated period, the underlying message is the same today as it ever was. It is perhaps... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
Atonement Ian McEwan
An excellent film but the beauty of the book is in its writing for McEwan is indeed one of our country’s literary giants. Get lost in his words, the hypocrisy of the upper-class world and then the shattering atrocities of... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland AND Through the Looking Glass Lewis Carroll
If you read this as a child, saw Disney’s version, which takes bits from both, or seen any of the other cartoons then you must read them again as an adult – you’ll get so much more out of them.... Format: Paperback - Released: 05/08/2010
This Summer Vintage is publishing a one-off series of books to highlight ten Vintage bestsellers whose films became box-office successes.
Rather than the run of the mill film tie-in edition, incorporating a
still from the film, Vintage wanted to create something different,
something that captured the whole concept of the book and film,
conveying the transition of the typed word to spoken word.
The results are cleverly jacketed editions where only film quotes have
been used on the jackets and the typeface has been chosen to reflect
the period or feel of the film, for example the quote on Catch 22 is
bold and playful and purposely echoes WWII Defence Posters in layout
and font.
Take a look for yourself and enjoy reading, or maybe re-reading, these iconic books. We are sure you won’t be disappointed.
