Romantic fiction is big news. Not only is it the most widely read genre but it provides more pleasure and escapism than any other.
50 years ago, the RNA was formed to promote the status of this broad and varied genre which now includes romantic comedy, chick lit, romantic suspense, sagas, family dilemmas and even vampire novels.

Photo: Jane Costello, Joanna Trollope, Lucy Dillon and Lynn Barber celebrate their awards.
The Awards are in the following categories and the winners were announced on 16 March 2010.
Romantic Comedy
Nominations for the award were made by the RNA’s team of readers, who were asked to score the books on their comedy element, from mildly amusing to side-splittingly funny.
People’s Choice
This award recognises key new or developing authors in the romantic genre with paperbacks out in the spring. Expert romantic writing buyers were asked to select their favourite 5 for this shortlist. Readers of romantic fiction are now invited to read as many of the new paperbacks as possible and vote for their favourite. (voting is now closed)
Romantic Film
Romance is a theme that moves easily from the printed page to film. In its
anniversary year, the RNA has chosen to celebrate this shared love of romance by selecting the best romantic films released in the UK during 2009 adapted from these published novels. Once again we are asking for your vote to select the winner. (voting is now closed)
Love Story of the Year
This prize honours the most memorable stories set around a single theme that concentrate on a developing love affair. The RNA’s team of readers gave the highest scores to stories containing strong passion combined with engaging and page-turning plots, that revealed unexpected insights into the characters.
Romantic Novel of the Year
The Romantic Novel of the Year Award was inaugurated in 1960 to
recognise excellence in romantic novels and enhance the standing of the
genre. Novels first published in the UK in 2009 were eligible for the
2010 Award.
Credits text:
The RNA is proud to be associated with libraries in promoting romantic fiction. In 2007, we joined forces with the Time To Read network of North West Libraries for a promotion called Pure Passion, which saw readers voting for their favourite romantic novel of the past ten years. The shared love of romantic fiction, which was at the heart of that successful initiative, continues to inspire our new Pure Passion Awards and we welcome the involvement of libraries in this new national promotion.
