The short stories of Anton Chekhov are continual reading for me and can be tuned into any time. They are beautiful observations of character and emotion with a glimpse of humanity from another age and time.

In this collection of 20 short stories, the editor Richard Ford has selected his personal favourites of Chekhov's work. Includes are "The Kiss", "The Darling", as well as lesser known tales such as "A Blunder", "Hush" and "Champagne".

The adjective 'Chekhovian is often used to praise short stories, but what does it really mean? American short-story writer Ford admits he read too little Chekhov too early, and only corrected this fault when asked to choose the best 20 out of over 220 stories by the great Russian master for this collection. The subtlety, precision and understated grace of the Russian writer's stories are fully evident in Ford's well-chosen selection.
