Lovereading view...

A very well written novel about a father's and a families grief after the murder of their youngest child. When Mack feels God has deserted him he receives a note, seemingly from God, and goes on a journey that helps to relinquish the anguish and blame he has been carrying around. Told with tenderness, as well as humour, this is a spiritual book but even if you are not particularly religious there is still a lot to gain from this moving and uplifting novel.

Synopsis

The Shack by William P. Young

Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgement he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant THE SHACK wrestles with the timeless question, 'Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?' The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book!

Reviews

"When the imagination of a writer and the passion of a theologian cross-fertilize the result is a novel on the order of The Shack. This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress did for his. It’s that good!" Eugene Peterson, Professor Emeritus Of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

"If God is all powerful and full of love, why doesn’t He do something about the pain and evil in our world? This book answers that age old question with startling creativity and staggering clarity. By far one of the best books I have ever read." James Ryle, Author Hippo in the Garden

"An exceptional piece of writing that ushers you directly into the heart and nature of god in the midst of agonizing human suffering. This amazing story will challenge you to consider the person and the plan of god in more expansive terms than you may have ever dreamed." David Gregory, author of Dinner with a Perfect Stranger

About the Author

William P. Young

William P Young was born in Canada and raised until the age of six by his missionary parents in Netherlands New Guinea, (West Papua), amongst the Dani, a technologically stone age tribal people. They became his family and as the first white child and outsider who ever spoke their language he was welcomed into their culture and community. He then returned to the West and after attending thirteen different schools, he paid his way through college with a series of jobs including being a disc jockey and a lifeguard. He now works as a general manager, janitor and inside sales guy for a friend who owns a small manufacturers rep company. He lives in Oregon, USA with his wife and six children. He has extensively written for business, but had no thought or intention of becoming an ‘author’. THE SHACK is his first book.
