March 2014 Debut of the Month.
Do not be fooled into thinking that this will be ‘just another Detective story’; this is clever, shockingly impactive and successfully erases any presuppositions. The author reveals information gradually, building the intrigue and allowing you to question and probe the evidence alongside the investigating team. The achingly sad picture that starts to emerge, tugs at your heart strings without sentimentality, helping to make the story powerfully arresting. Secrets are set to be shattered, no matter who they belong to. Can it be detrimental or even dangerous to empathise, to imagine the torture that some of the characters have faced? The author has the ability to describe horrifying brutality, without glorifying it. The simple stark descriptions of lives created from fear and violence, lead you to question the path that broken and mutilated minds can take. A penetrating and riveting read, tension continues to intensify before it ultimately and devastatingly snaps. This is an impressive debut novel that will leave you yearning for a sequel.
