Summer Reading selections

Did you know that 1 in 5 of us only read on holiday? Also when these people do read they could devour 5 books! – so making sure you choose ones you will enjoy this Summer is even more important. That’s where Lovereading’s unique approach, of handpicked selections and free Opening Extracts of all the books we feature, is priceless.

Read on for some of this month’s highlights and news of new fiction publisher Blue Door, the CWA Dagger Awards and our Sci-Fi category which has had a mega makeover. Or scroll down to see a selection of personal favourites from our Summer Reading selections.

This months Highlights – not to be missed

Behind the Blue Door – discover an exciting new publisher

We are pleased to be part of the launch of a terrific new imprint – Blue Door – from one of the leading UK publishers, HarperCollins. The seasoned Publishing Director behind it, Patrick Janson-Smith, was responsible for bringing us Sophie Kinsella’s hilarious Shopaholic series and Slumdog Millionaire. With Patrick’s unique, eclectic taste for potential bestsellers we are expecting some exciting books in the future. Find out more about his launch titles in our special section.

Science Fiction isn’t just for geeks!

Perhaps it’s the dire economic situation making people want to ‘escape’, but Science Fiction is having a bit of a renaissance and what’s even better is that UK authors are spearheading the way. So, we have decided to give this important, overlooked and sometimes maligned genre a bit of a boost with 3 special features this month.

Firstly, we have one of THE industry aficionados, Maxim Jakubowski, choosing his Top 10 British Sci-Fi writers, then we have a profile on a brand new Sci-Fi publisher ‘Angry Robot’.

And finally, our Sci-Fi and Horror regular monthly category has had a makeover and it now has even more amazing reads.

So, if you already love Sci-Fi you will be in paradise, if not then give it a try, risk free, by reading one of our dozens and dozens of free Opening Extracts. As they say – recessions are the best time to innovate.

Watch out for the Daggers!

Last, but not least, this month sees the start of the Dagger Awards season the most prestigious Crime Awards bar none. There are a myriad of different categories, including Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, up for grabs over the coming months and we will be following them in a special section on our site. July new Books and special Summer Reading feature

With summer come ideal reading opportunities – so let Lovereading help you find the perfect books for scorching days on far-away beaches or balmy British afternoons in the garden. Read on for dozens of Summer Reading selections and much more…

Summer Reads – hot and with a plot

As always, our Summer Reads are themed to cater for your every emotional whim – but this year we’ve also added some fantastic audio books so, if you want the luxury of a literary adventure without the strain of turning pages, try Summer Listening instead! Plus for all those teenagers and young adults out there we have a selection of absolute must reads – just forward them the link and tell them you think they are dreadful!

Authors of the Month – two great talents to discover

Debbie Macomber

Debbie Macomber is an internationally acclaimed author who has the honour of penning the first ‘romance novel’ to be reviewed in the rather snooty US Publishers Weekly! Her new book, Summer on Blossom Street, is a heartwarming tale about a knitting club whose members are all trying to make a clean escape from shadows in their pasts.

Kevin Brooks

We think Kevin Brooks is so good we’re declaring him our ‘new gen Author of the Month’. Lovereading‘s new gen category features writing for young adult readers but don’t feel you can’t look yourself. Kevin is without doubt one of the best teenage fiction writers around and Killing God is hard-hitting and explores serious themes through a tantalisingly imaginative plot.

Books of the Month – amazing new stories

The Girl who Played with Fire
Stieg Larsson

The second in the brilliant Millennium Trilogy. Lisbeth Salander is suspected of a double murder, but Michael Blomkvist, editor of the Millennium newspaper, is doing his utmost to uncover the truth.

Storm Glass
Maria V Snyder

The first book in a compelling new fantasy trilogy; Opal sets out to save the Storm Clan, pitting her unique but untested magical abilities against danger and deception.

The Tenth Case
Joseph Teller

An utterly compulsive legal thriller about a maverick criminal defence lawyer whose only chance of saving his career is to prove the innocence of a girl charged with killing her elderly husband.

The Host
Stephenie Meyer

From the author of the hugely successful Twilight Series comes a novel that will have huge appeal to adults about a strange species who are taking over the world by inhabiting human bodies…

Louise Wener – Guest Editor of the Month!

This month Lovereading’s special guest editor is Louise Wener, author of the wonderful Worldwide Adventures in Love. Louise has shared, exclusively with Lovereading, some of the books and authors that inspired her writing career, and can inspire you too – from Jilly Cooper to Sebastian Faulks.

Dark, dangerous and delightful – the Dagger Awards 2009

On 15 July the Crime Writers’ Association announces the first winners in their prestigious annual 2009 Dagger Awards. We’re featuring a selection of our absolute favourites from the shortlists, including Peter James and Stieg Larsson – download some free Opening Extracts and choose your winner.
