The Most Expensive Books Ever Sold in the 20th Century…

At Lovereading.co.uk we know books can be great value Christmas presents, and a doddle to wrap but we thought it might be fun to let you know about some books are the other end of the value scale.

The following books were sold for insane amounts of money and please note our 2008 estimates of value don’t take into account current economic conditions. But if you can pay this much for a book ……

Do let us know if you think we have missed any out.

1 – The Codex Leicester…

When Da Vinci was scribbling his scientific/artistic thoughts and observations in one of his notebooks, there’s no way he could have known how valuable it would turn out to be. The Codex Leicester book which he drew, sketched and made notes in was sold for $30.8 million in 1994 to none other than the richest geek on the block – Bill ‘Microsoft’ Gates.

What’s more, if all of a sudden Bill decided to up and sell it today (midlife crisis, possible divorce alimony), he’d be making a cool $13 million in profit (at least). That’s by how much the book’s appreciated in value since 1994. (image credit: wikimedia.org)

2 – Gospels of Henry the Lion…

Yes, back in those days, lions not only walked the earth, but could write too. Nope. Not one miseducated lion in sight, I tell ya.…and if you believe that…

It’s said that the Gospels of Henry the Lion date back to 1188. Henry, who was the prince of Saxony and Bavaria at the time, commissioned a group of Benedictine monks to write it. It contains 4 holy gospels written on parchment plus 50 small gold-leaf paintings and was often used during mass at St Mary’s (Braunschweig).

In 1983, the book was auctioned at Sotheby’s for $12 million. In 2008, it’s worth double that. (image credit: danielmitsui.com)

3 – The Canterbury Tales…

The first ever edition of the Canterbury Tales was printed back in the 15th century (1477, to be exact). Penned by Geoffrey Chaucer, there are apparently only about 12 copies of this edition left in the whole world.

In 1998, one of them was put up for auction at London’s Christie’s. The most that was expected was £700k. At over half a million pounds, that’s far from bad.

However, it sold for way way waaaay more than that at an unbelievable £4.6 million  (image credit: bbc.co.uk)

4 – The Northumberland Bestiary…

The Northumberland Bestiary. Hmm. Sounds like the name of a Sherlock Holmes film…but anyway, the Bestiary is an illustrated book created in 13th century medieval England and depicts a richly drawn run-through of different animals – real and fictional – ranging from monkeys to dragons and many others in-between (including one of Adam naming all of them).

In 1990, it changed hands with a private collector for $5.85 million. (image credit: bestiary.ca)

5 – The Gutenberg Bible…

German-born Johannes Gutenberg was the founding big daddy of the movable-type printing process. Whereas books were painstakingly handwritten, his method changed everything.

Though he experimented on other small works, printing the Bible via movable type was the first big project he ever took on. He printed a mixture of versions: some versions had 42-lines of text per page while others had 36 lines. Some only contained the Old or New Testament or both. Some were printed on paper and others on vellum.

Gutenberg Bibles are extremely rare which is one of the major factors that probably contributed towards the Old-Testament print selling for $5.4million in 1987 (and one single page selling for $26,000 in 1999). (image credit: wikipedia.org)

6 – The Manuscript of Nine Symphonies…

When Mozart’s Nine Symphonies was put up for auction in 1987, there’d obviously be a bit of a scramble for it – but no one ever imagined the musical manuscript would sell for more than $1.7million tops. Even the auctioneers at the time, Sotheby’s, were cautionary in their predictions.

Oh yea of little faith. Tut tut.

The hammer went down for over double that at a cool $4.39 million and became the first manuscript of music to have been sold at such high a price. (image credit: wikipedia.org)

7 – The Monypenny Breviary…

This French illuminated manuscript was created in the 15th century and is said to be one the best of its kind to come out of that era.

Containing 120 illustrated pieces in total, it’s believed to have been created by two great illuminators of the time, Jean and Jacques de Montluçon.

In June 1989, it was sold for $4.3 million but is probably worth a lot more than that today. (image credit: sothebys.com)

8 – The Birds of America…

The Birds of America is the title of a four-volume book that was created by the famous painter and naturalist, John J. Audubon. In it, Audubon created 435 engravings (all coloured by hand) of every bird that was known to exist in 1820s/30s America. Must have been exhausting for Johnny Boy, surely.

In 1992, the book was auctioned by Christies for $4.07 million. (image credit: audubon.org)

9 - Hebrew Bible…

In December 1989, Sotheby’s auctioned off an old Hebrew Bible for a record mouthwatering $3.19 million, making it the most ever paid for a piece of Hebrew manuscript at the time. It was bought by a Yecheskel Toporowitch.

The Hebrew Bible was believed to have originated from as far back as the 10th (or even 9th) century in an area of Babylon where the Jews lived. (image credit: answers.com)
