More exciting book news for October and the 1st hint of Christmas

Christmas is sneaking up on us so why not take the bull by the horns and choose some books as presents for your friends and family. They are great value, can give hours of pleasure and they are very easy to wrap! But before we get too carried away we still have lots of book news and events on the site which have nothing to do with Christmas.

Highlights this month…

Author of the Month, Maeve Binchy Debut of the Month - A Season of Leaves by Catherine Law Book of the Month - Testimony
Book of the month - The People of the Book Debut of the Month - Fathers and Sons by Richard Madeley Book of the Month - Deadline

Armistice Day…

11 Nov 2008 is the 90 year anniversary of Armistice Day and we have a special selection of books to commemorate the end of WW1. It’s a conflict that has never strayed far from people’s minds, at least in part, because of the powerful and enduring writing it has inspired over the years. Read the books so that we never forget.

Special Christmas Categories…

Books, great value, giving hours of pleasure and no batteries required!

Along with all our normal categories of books we have 3 specials just for Christmas. Click on any of the buttons below to go straight to our festive selections.

Enjoy the show, enjoy the Opening Extract…

And finally, we worked with Sky to support The Book Show which was broadcast from Hay-on-Wye earlier this year. Now we’ll be supporting the programme again with the new series of The Book Show on Sky Arts presented by Mariella Frostrup. From 23 October you’ll be able to read Opening Extracts of the books featured in the show on a special new section of our site. We hope you enjoy the TV programme and our new reader service.

Shrug off Credit Crunch gloom with a book

Years ago, before everyone thought they had so much moolah they ought to rush out and buy single-use DVD players, iPod Skiffles and designer kitchen bins, there was the humble book.

Now that some of the glittering opulence of the 21st century has been stripped away by the Credit Crunch, books are still here for us. They’re a simple pleasure to entertain us, enrich our lives, and help us realise that money isn’t everything.

Books are cheap. Granted they cost more than they once did; but there are still amazing bargains to be had, especially online. Choose carefully, and you can get a week or two’s spellbinding entertainment for the price of a large glass of Pinot Grigio.

Reading gives much longer-term pleasure than the instant gratification of buying stuff. Far from disposable, the ideas in a great novel can make you into a more rounded, interesting person, shaping and colouring the way you see the world. And once you’ve finished, a book sits handsomely on your shelf – to be treasured, reread or dipped into, without ever needing upgrading.

And if you’re really fretting about money, reading is proven to reduce stress, and is by far the best way to escape the muddle of the world for a while.

For these reasons (plus ease of gift-wrapping) books also make the perfect Credit Crunch presents. If Christmas is looking a bit leaner than usual this year, don’t forget how much you’re giving someone when you give them a book.

To make sure you choose right, for yourself or for a loved one, it’s useful to have some guidance, which is where the tools on Lovereading.co.uk come into their own. And if you still can’t decide, you can send a Lovereading book voucher by email.

So if you’re feeling the pinch, try not to worry. Tightening the purse strings doesn’t necessarily equate to misery. It means a chance to spend a little more time enjoying some great books.

Author of the Month – Maeve Binchy

This massively popular writer has a new book out this month Heart and Soul. Doctor Clara Casey has more than enough on her plate – two troubled daughters, a new job and an ex-husband who wants something… Meanwhile, Declan gets more than he bargains for when he joins the clinic, and Ania is hoping her new job away from Poland can mend her broken heart. Find out more and discover some of her wonderful older books (or backlist – as we call them in the trade)

Brilliant Books of the Month for October

Dead Line is by Stella Rimington, most famous for her controversially frank memoirs of her time as Director-General of MI5. Her new novel is about Liz Carlyle, an MI5 officer who has to has to get to the bottom of some worrying intelligence fast: the future of the whole Middle East depends on it.

And Testimony is by master storyteller Anita Shreve. A gripping, pacy and emotional drama, Testimony sees a videotaped sex scandal break at a New England boarding school; the resulting outcry shows how lives can be derailed and destroyed in one foolish moment.

Be one of the first to read first time novels

Some really wonderful reads can be found in our Debut section. We’ve always championed first-time authors because we want you to stay ahead of the game as readers. There are future prize-winners and must-reads just waiting to be discovered – for proof, look at some of the books we have featured in the past that have gone on to become bestsellers: My Vintage Summer and Child 44 to name just two.

This month we have two. First, from well-known TV presenter Richard Madeley, comes Fathers and Sons; a bravely honest history of the male side of his family through the last century. This thoughtful book considers how fathers and sons relate to each other and shape each other’s lives.

And A Season of Leaves by Catherine Law is an extraordinary love story. Rose Pepper has kept secrets from her daughter for over 40 years, but some old letters threaten to betray her history – her love affair with a young Czech soldier, and their struggle to avoid communist persecution after eloping to Prague.

Which book do you think should win the Man Booker prize?

The Man Booker Prize winner will be announced on 14 October. You can read Opening Extracts from the six shortlisted books here and rest assured they’re all brilliant. Michael Portillo, who is chairing this year’s judging panel, described them as “intensely readable, each of them an extraordinary example of imagination and narrative.” You can also register your favorite in the on site poll.

Lovereading readers lead the way in Booker prize shortlist poll

Manbooker

Please note – for future readers of this post that it was written 2 weeks before the results of the Man Booker prize 2008 were announced – so we have to admit that are readers, and rather embarrassingly the bookies got it very wrong! – right, with that said read on!

With 2 weeks to go until the announcement of the Man Booker Prize winner it looks like Lovereading.co.uk readers are, once again, ahead of the game.

In an on site poll the clear leader with 35% of the vote is Amitav Ghosh – Sea of Poppies and it looks like the Bookies are following suit.

When the shortlist was announced Sea of Poppies was 4th favourite at 6/1 the odds have now been shortened to 7/2 making it the 2nd favourite.

The bookies favourite is still Sebastian Barry – The Secret Scripture now at 5/2 but in the Lovereading.co.uk onsite poll it is currently 3rd with only 17% of the vote behind Linda Grant – The Clothes on Their Backs with 22%.

What William Hill and the Lovereading.co.uk readers do agree on, however, is the last placed book which is Aravind Adiga – The White Tiger.

Lovereading.co.uk has a special section devoted to the prize and website users can download and read the Opening Extract of all the shortlist totally free!

The prize includes attending the final judging meeting in January 2009 with the nine other judging panel members to decide the Costa Book of the Year 2008. The winner will also attend the Costa Book Awards gala dinner and awards presentation.

From Wednesday 1st October 2008, the competition will be promoted throughout all of Costa’s UK stores with entries submitted via www.costabookawards.com.
